Pondicherry has around 150 temples in the main town area, most of them almost hidden and you will be able to see them while walking around the boulevard. Some of these temples are of great historic importance which are inscribed in ancient literature and manuscripts.
One of the most popular temple and prominent temples is Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple. History says that this temple was constructed on the banks of a sandy pond with fragrance during 1666 A.D.
It is believed that when the French tried to remove the deity, the deity reappeared every time.
The temple is situated very close to the Raj Nivas (Governor Bungalow). It is very vibrant and a must see in Pondicherry.
